Roman culture was passionate about gladiatorial circus, an amphitheatre in Merida, the Lusitanian capital, could not be missed. Therefore, in the 8th century BC the Roman amphitheatre of Mérida was built, it served as an artificial stage for the recreation of small Mediterranean forests, lagoons and deserts for the fight of gladiators and hunts of tigers and lions.
In the arena, you can see a large moat where all the machinery was located to raise and lower the platforms of the development of shows.
The amphitheatre has been a World Heritage Site since 1993 and it is possible to visit the remains along with the rest of the archaeological site of Mérida.
